William Hammerschmidt Elementary School Awarded $155,000 Grant
A $155,000 matching grant from the DuPage Community Foundation will make it possible to begin the transformation of the playground of William Hammerschmidt Elementary School, in Lombard. The new version will be a naturally interactive gardenscape that fosters a healthy environment for students to learn and play. WRD donated the concept plan and looks forward to continuing work at the school.
Among the amenities will be a nature play area, outdoor classrooms, a butterfly garden and more.
WRD’s Andi Cooper, a school parent who chairs the WHS Learn + Play Gardens project, says the project, which will also solve drainage problems on the site, is having a ripple effect. The Village of Lombard is now looking at stormwater management issues in the surrounding community.
