William Hammerschmidt School's Green Playground OpensMore than 150 grade school students and their parents turned out for the opening celebration of William Hammerschmidt School’s green playground. But before the kids could climb, swing and slide, they had to work. They helped spread mulch throughout the playground to provide natural cushioning. The playground, designed by WRD, is part of the school’s Learn + Play Gardens project.
“This project is a milestone for Lombard School District 44,” said Ted Stec, assistant superintendent of finance for the district. “Our families and community have worked tirelessly to raise funds and make this dream a reality.”
In 2013, volunteers installed edible gardens at the school. Next summer, they’ll complete the project with a butterfly garden, native plantings and more.
WRD’s Andi Cooper, a WHS parent, chairs the project.
