Sipley Elementary School's Campus Wins Conservation Award

The John L. Sipley Elementary School, in Woodridge, Illinois, is being recognized with a Chicago Wilderness Conservation and Native Landscaping Award for its Green Campus Initiative. Before the initiative, which Woodridge School District 68 developed and executed with the help of WRD Environmental, the campus had significant runoff and flooding problems.

Today, the driveway and parking lot have been replaced with permeable pavers. Most of the area around the base of the building is either a rain garden, planted solely with native plants, or a splash pad of permeable pavers. These and other plantings on the site have also increased biodiversity to enhance habitat and learning opportunities.

This green-campus transformation was the first of seven the school district plans, with a total of three completed to date.
