Woodridge School District 68 serves approximately 2,400 elementary and middle school students in south-central DuPage County. John L. Sipley is one of the district's schools.
Goal
- Work closely with Woodridge School District personnel and teachers at Sipley to design and implement green infrastructure strategies and outdoor learning opportunities
- Replaced nearly an acre of asphalt and concrete with permeable pavers, recreating the site's natural hydrology
- Resolved flooding and sidewalk frost-heave problems around the school
- Aquired stormwater grants totaling $84,000
- Created a reading garden and an outdoor learning space for curriculum enhancement
- Organized a school-wide educational program to teach the value of native plants and habitats, and the importance of managing stormwater and conserving water
- Reduced the amount of time staff spends caring for hardscapes by eliminating the need to patch asphalt cracks and reducing the need for de-icing salt
